Clear Lake State Park
The park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and offers excellent opportunities for hiking, boating, bird watching, swimming, bass fishing and waterskiing. The visitor's center features a large aquarium of the lake's species and educational displays on the area's natural, cultural, and recreational resources. Hiking trails include the Dorn Trail, a three-mile moderately strenuous hike that winds through the oak woodlands, chaparral, manzanitas and native wildflowers. The Indian Nature Trail is an easier, quarter-mile-long walk that takes hikers back into time, passing through the site of a former Pomo village and demonstrating their use of native plants.
Wine Tasting and Vineyards
For wine enthusiasts Lake County offers an exciting opportunity to explore small, boutique producers in an area that is booming with new, innovative wineries focused on sustainability, organic, and biodynamic principles. The area has over ten thousand acres of planted vineyards and variety of tasting rooms with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. You can even indulge in a chauffeured wine tour with a knowledgeable guide from Eleven Roses Ranch. The beautiful Ceago Vinegarden sits right on Clear Lake and has boat slips available for those visiting their tasting room. The area's relaxed style, award-winning wineries and festivals makes Clear Lake the perfect spot for both beginners and connoisseurs to explore a formerly hidden wine region.
Redbud Park and Thompson Harbor
Located in downtown Clearlake, this is the staging area for many of the amateur and major national bass fishing tournaments held on Clear Lake. The largest natural lake entirely in California, Clear Lake has a reputation for being home to "monster bass" and is known as the "Bass Capital of the West." Besides our monster bass, the lake is also home to catfish, carp, crappie, bluegill, and the Clear Lake hitch, a fish indigenous to the Clear Lake basin and found only here. In the past, hitch was an important staple to the native Pomo people of Lake County, and can be seen swimming up major streams in the late spring.
Anderson Marsh State Historic Park
The preserve dates back over 10,000 years when the Pomos inhabited the marsh and serves to protect the area's rich history and ecology. The park stretches over 1,065 acres, and Pomo artifacts can be found throughout the park, as well as excellent bird viewing opportunities from land or water. The park is home to a variety of protected wildlife in addition to the abundant waterfowl, including various species of fish, turtles, bats, gray fox, frogs, mink, muskrats, opossums, raccoon and river otters. There are several trails - both wet and dry - that explore the riparian, grassland, oak woodland, and tule marsh habitats, including the Marsh, Ridge, Anderson Flats, and Cache Creek Nature Trails, which feature interpretive displays. The McVicar Wildlife Sanctuary is open to the public, as well as an old ranch house, where weekend tours are conducted.
Taylor Observatory - Norton Planetarium
In nearby Kelseyville the Taylor Observatory and Norton Planetarium hosts public events on the third Saturday of every month. Events generally begin with a short classroom presentation dealing with a topic in astronomy, such as the solar system, and are followed by Planetarium Show that includes a tour of the evening's constellations, deep sky objects, and a slide show of an area of astronomical interest. The observatory's telescopes are used to observe the Moon, planets, nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters, and are available for viewing during daytime events. Call 707-262-4121 for details; interactive shows are available for education outreach and special events.
Casinos and Gaming
After a day of great bass fishing, enjoy the best gaming action Northern California has to offer at the nearby Robinson Rancheria Casino and Konocti Vista Casino. The casinos feature slot machines, table games, bingo, restaurants, full bars, banquet and conference facilities. Konocti Vista can also be accessed directly from the lake and has its own 90 slip marina.
